  4. Where is the cold-fusion guru?

  7.     Before anyone jumps to conclusions, there is probably an
  8. innocent explanation for the fact that Stanley Pons has dropped
  9. out of sight, hiding his whereabouts from the press and his
  10. employers. Granted, the University of Utah chemist has been
  11. under pressure since March 1989, when he and British colleague
  12. Martin Fleischmann said they had created fusion in a jar.
  13. Skeptical scientists doubted that the pair had tamed the sun's
  14. power source -- at room temperature. The complaint was not just
  15. that they had announced their discovery at a press conference
  16. rather than in a scientific journal but also that no one else
  17. had been able to replicate the experiment.

  19.     Pons' disappearance comes just as the state of Utah is
  20. trying to decide whether it should continue to support a
  21. cold-fusion laboratory on which the state has already spent $5
  22. million. And it hardly helps that there are reports that Pons'
  23. phone has been disconnected and his Salt Lake City home put up
  24. for sale. But Pons is not totally out of touch: last week he
  25. requested a one-year sabbatical by having his lawyer send a fax
  26. to the university. If he ever surfaces, he will no doubt be
  27. able to explain what he has been doing and set suspicious minds
  28. to rest.
